ABOUT THE RETREAT EXPERIENCE

What is a retreat experience?

Mt. Gilead gives its visitors and volunteers the serenity of secluded woodland with trails of varying length and difficulty, some paced with benches for reflecting.  In this way, the retreat experience may be an hour of meditation, a few hours of walking and breathing in the exquisite natural beauty of the land, or a day of quiet waiting in the woods. A secluded hermitage is available for those desiring daytime or overnight retreats, with or without the guidance of a spiritual director.

Mount Gilead Friends Retreat has always offered spiritual direction as an option for retreatants at Fox Haven, our hermitage. Trained and certified spiritual directors are available to meet with you for $40/session.  If you would like to meet with a spiritual director (either once or on a daily basis) let us know when you make your reservation and your sessions will be scheduled.

The retreat experience may also be a workshop with a small group identifying edible wild plants, making woodcuts inspired by nature, exploring a simpler lifestyle, or helping groups of children discover the joy and wonder of wildness.

While Mt. Gilead Friends Retreat is grounded in the spiritual and social values of the Religious Society of Friends, we are open to anyone seeking a deeper understanding of the Divine mystery.

What is the Hermitage?

TheFox Haven Hermitage is a secluded cabin, located halfway up a woodland ridge, overlooking Sulfur Spring Valley. Finely crafted of cordwood and timber frame, its wood comes entirely from local trees. The hermitage is simply furnished so as not to distract from its inherent beauty. (Please read about the Hermitage Experience for more information.)
