The Fairy Tale as Vision
Transformation in the Telling, II
Led by Mike Carson
Saturday, January 16th
9:30 a.m. -12:30 p.m.
Fairy tales, like the Psalms and all good poetry, are to be read more than once because always new. This workshop will be an inquiring into "wonder" in select Grimm's Fairy Tales. Emphasis will be on seeing the power of transformation at work in the action of these pre-literate tales, the spirituality in their stories. For these fairy tales are not only for children, but for all who enter the mystery they offer. They can transform us quickly, "in the length of time it takes for the heart to turn toward God."
Simplicity will be the approach of our inquiring, for these tales create their effects through brilliant simplicity, and in fact take simplicity as a Way. We will read and listen to these tales, discuss them, and consider the benefit of "telling" that these works were made for. Following discussion of one or more tales, we will have time for personal reflection and then a further sharing of ideas. This workshop is both a continuation of a 2015 workshop and intended to be entirely original. Some background reading will be sent to participants prior to the workshop.
